Application performance vs appearance

Some questions for the application developer. When you code the scripts do you put more weight on its overall appearance or do you focus on its performance?

To make some site look good I have been in problems like putting some more images and effects on to the pages. It might not even be good move from the SEO point of view also.

When I make the scripts more SEO friendly and compact which would load like a lightning on users PC then it has to be smaller in total page size and thus effects and images are to be taken out.

Have been trying CSS rollovers and using images as background and repeating them wherever possible. But still am not satisfied with it.

If you have some tips on this one then please do share them here.

RE: Application performance vs appearance

Hi nick, it seems to me that this is more about design - some graphical designs cannot be implemented in html without using big images.

Personally, I'm not a designer, but I always pick templates that are light, without too many images.

And when I'm programming, performance is always a priority - no point having something which is beautiful, but no one will ever see because they have left before it's loaded!

Can you post a url? I could take a look, I might be able to help?
