I'm still getting an error message if I try to use the new posts or today's posts links at the top.

I use these a lot to check on things... :-(

Yes this area was restricted :P But not anymore something to do with the database. :(

Check the admin area, and db and make sure it is still marked that way? When updated db, then reverted to restore forum, different MySQL versions store db's differently so the "setting" to block this area from non-staff may be missing.

Humm.... database updated once again. I reassigned the permissions.

But still it is showing the section to guests.

WOW PM's are working again :) Now thinking to do something about the sections. :D

Make sure the db still has the appropriate fields for the privacy settings and that they are not empty if they still exists. That goof-up when did patching may have deleted them accidently, but I don't know all the fields in MyBB since I don't use it and haven't looked at all its code.
