RE: Get a free domain name
I checked out FREEDOMAINSITE.COM.
It seems that you have to sign up for some kind of service with a credit card and cancel before you are charged. Has anyone gotten the domain for free from them? I am a little weary of giving credit card information, address information, and contact information on the basis of a cancellation - what if you are charged, anyway?

RE: Get a free domain name
If it seems to be too good to be true.... then it may not be, sort of.
The first one says Note: You don't actually own the domain name in some cases, but can use it in accordance with their terms, usually requiring a small amount of traffic and a banner or popup.
The second one is sort of a scam. You sign up and the person gets some kind of affiliate commission for you to sign up. Then you cancel and they still get paid.
There is almost always some "trick" involved. If you get an offer that is directly from a company then I would be careful and consider it, but in general I think you are asking for trouble with offers like this.
One of the reseller accounts I opened gave me a free domain. Later it took me about 3 weeks of phone calls and emails to get the ownership put in my name, since I was not the "owner"....! It was NOT worth the $7 I saved to get it.

RE: Get a free domain name
I don't think that I would ever go for free web hosting unless it was provided by a company directly or it was from my Internet service provider.
I agree that the free domain registry seems a little on the unattractive side since it only costs a few dollars to register a domain in the first place, so thank you for the heads up on that, nielsencl.

RE: Get a free domain name
I would never go for a free one. If it is not in our control and if we spend our precious time in cultivating the web traffic and then someday it just vanishes in thin air without our knowledge then it will be the worst day of your life.
Free domains and free hosting :crying: Its better to get one of our own and stay with it. Atleast we have some control over it.
On the contrary if people don't have domains then there are contests like ours and there are members like ours who would not think twice before gifting a domain name to someone for some work getting done.
It doesn't takes much to do some basic work for someone and ask for an unwanted domain name if he is not going to use it or if he is going to just let it expire. Most domains might be junk but even then if proper time and efforts are put behind it. It will shine.

RE: Get a free domain name
I used to search for free hosting in the early days of the Internet. I know that, now, you get what you pay for.

RE: Get a free domain name
Are people really interested in getting free domains?
If so, why and what would you do with it?
If you could get a lot of free domains what would you do with them?
Would it be ok to get an existing domain, or would you want to choose a new one?
Would .info domains be ok?
Would you be will to link to the provider or run some ads on your site?
Would you use paid or free hosting with your free domain?

RE: Get a free domain name
Good questions nielsencl.
Let me also add one of mine.
What would you do if after doing some marketing and wasting your precious time the domain owner company decides to take back that domain and just park it to pump the traffic on parking pages?
