Pros and Cons of using iframe?

I'm thinking about using an iframe for my top menu links, but was wondering if it would in fact be foolish?

My main idea is that the same menu would appear on every page without me faffing around updating it on different pages, if i want to change it.

I've heard that iframes work better than the older non-i frames, but I'm not sure why?

Do iframes really pose any big disadvantages, re search engines etc, or are there any other issues I need to think about before doing it? Since I already have an xml sitemap with google, would it make any real difference SE wise?

Any other thoughts?

THANKS!

RE: Pros and Cons of using iframe?

Thanks for sharing this informative post and another pros is frames can also help reduce bandwidth and server load because the same content does not need to be loaded every time a new page is visited.
Cones- rest of this page is devoted to disadvantage of frame.

RE: Pros and Cons of using iframe?

iFrame is really not that popular anymore. There are many other alternatives for that available nowadays.

RE: Pros and Cons of using iframe?

pros:

1: you can develop your application in any major programming language (not limited to Javascript);
2:you can host your application files entirely in your own servers.
cons:

1:you still don't have all OpenSocial features iplemented on the RESTfull API;
