i have heard many times that the backlinks need to be relevent, but what should be the relevency factor!
For eg my blog is about linux and open source software, so will the backlinks related to anything thats computers is OK or i got to have backlinks form linux and open source links!!

Please tell me!!

If u working on any site u know the area or theme of your site. as u told if u working on linux site that means open source OS.. so u can do link exchange with some OS related sites, u can do LE with open source program related site.. or other technical, programming related sites..

but u can not do link exchange with Health related site.. u can see here totally different theme.which might harm your ranking.

Relevant means the site that is similar or has some relation with your site.

EX: If our domain forum is linked from some other domain forum then it is relevant that any one can understand.

Other scenario is if a hosting site provides link to our domain forums then also it is a good one.

Domain registrars, domain parking providers, domain name portfolio holders and other domaining related blogs all are relevant backlinks for our domain related forums.

I think you should search for LSI also.

Basically, your goal is to get backlinks from the appropriate audience. You would want your backlinks to come from software, hardware, and technology websites.

Irrelevant backlinks would be from social bookmarking websites or social directories, for example; there wouldn't be much relevance for you there!
