The Domain Game

Chapter 3 for the Learn domaining with Nameslot.com

The Domain Game

Now the real fun starts. The initial things might have bored you. But that were necessary for an understanding of domain names and how they work.

Lets imagine that your name is John and someone calls you from behind “John!”
Your reflex action would be to look in that direction because your name is John and it has been assigned to you from your birth.

Imagine another scenario.
Your name is John and the guy standing beside is also John.
Someone calls from behind “John!”
What happens is both of the John’s responds to the call.

If in real life this kind of problems are occurring then what would happen if you type in google.com in your browser and 2 or 3 sites responds with their search engine box.

So the domain names are unique. With their main keyword name and their TLD. For example Google.com where “google” is the main name and “.com” is the TLD.

Lets say you own some domain EX: OnlyTravels.com

And someone else is interested in buying that domain name for his Travels business or agency.

If he goes to the domain registrar he or she might not be able to register it as it is already taken.

Some domain name availability checkers are:
http://www.domainsbot.com
http://www.domaintools.com

You can search for the desired domain name over there and see if it is available for registration or not.

Most of the domain name that can normally be thought of are already taken. At the time I am writing this book 64,229,873 .com domains are active on the internet. 198,771,899 are deleted .com domains. Plus 1,302,473 newly registered. Within next 24 hours 35,886 .com domains will expire.

The above figures show just how thin the line is. It was just the data of the .com TLD. Other popular extensions like .net, .org and .info if added will more then double the figures.

The ccTLD’s country code top-level domain will add 5 times more in the final total.

Sometimes one can say that finding a good domain name nowadays is almost impossible. Due to sheer number of domains, which are already taken.

What if someone owns the domain name you are interested in and is willing to sell it to you for a descent amount of money. That’s the place where the domain name buyers and sellers come in. They like to call themselves as domainers.
