In particular, if you have any ideas on how I can make the site more appealing to (i) locals and (ii) foreign visitors that would be really appreciated!

Nice forum you have got there.

I would advice to make a nice theme for it. So it can be more appealing to the users.

Your content and other things are fine. And yes Content brings in more visitors. But to convert most of the visitors from a Visitor into a member the site itself will surely need some modifications.

what type of mods do you recommend?

in regard to the skin, i was thinking maybe of making a real "aussie" skin but then it might be a bit overbearing. what do you think? :)

Mods like Reputation, Cash and other prizes makes user become more active on the forum. This will surely increase the forum post count and the members loyalty towards your forum.

Skin I would advice to make soft not too much hard on eyes. People need to read forums faster then the normal text. And If you want someone to spend his 4 or 5 hours daily on your site then you ofcourse have to choose light colors which are pleasant to the eyes.

ok great i will investigate those sorts of mods for Invision Power Board. I am pretty sure they exist.
