Most international customers won't feel fully comfortable buying from a .in unless it is a service area that .in site specialize in (e.g. SEO). They will often leave and try to find a .com or .net equivalent service. If you are after an Indian based market, .in is perfect.

At the moment, it's still fairly unknown. If you are after a global market, go for .com, .net or .org. If you want a country based market, use the regional domain ending (e.g. com.au for Australia). It's better for the long term success of your business.
