yea, i think u did not given proper links or u might not get approval from article directory.there might be many reason..

Actually i enlist some related keywords in groups of 3-4 targeted keywords and make article targeting those keywords. and than i submit article to 300 article directories. i used to do article submission which is really helpful to get one way links.

I use only google, i go for MSN and yahoo when i did not get ranking on google for long time lol. and i check yahoo for back links of my competitor.

Now a days i m not doing much submission as i go for article submission but i can say that my speed is good as i can submit 1000 submission in 7-8 hours. but i used to go for article submission as it help more with compare to directory submission and i can submit 100 article within 2 hours.

Signature links will help is SEO to index your new pages quickly and it help to boost PR but as far as my experience tell,it wont help in SERP coz u will have back links from non relevant pages. so google will not give more weight to those links for ranking.
