Advice on renting privately

I am moving to London soon and I look forward to a variety of apartments for rent.
I do not know if they are the best to rent or lease the appropriate representative from a private landlord. Its just feel so many stories about people getting ripped off in private, but then you hear all the high tariffs for the agencies.
I would appreciate your advice, what guidelines should be covered when you rent private, so do not be fooled.
