First of all you need fresh/quality/informative content for your website/blog. Then comes to get search engines notify about your website/blog. Try to make as many submissions to search engines as you can. Now there are several methods to get people attracted to your website/blog. Following are few of the methods:

- Article Submission (submit your unique articles to free article directories)
- Directory Submission (submit your website/blog to free directories)
- Take part in Forum Discussions
- Start commenting on website/blog of your Niche

i believe that by advertising you mean "PPC marketing", then my suggestion would be like, yes it is a good way to drive traffic back to your site. but only drawback with PPC is it is very costly and until you feed the dragon it will serve you well, once you stop doing that it will leave you alone on such competitive market.

Best solution to drive traffic is content marketing intertwine it with Social media as well as SEO. And believe me it is no rocket science.... you can do it with very basis knowledge, thou it required hard work... and that to result cannot be achieve in a night. it take long time and patience.
