Is it more valuable to buy the main TLDs for a domain?

Hi,

I just bought a pretty nice little .com business domain and now the owner has contacted me to say he can also sell me the .biz, .net, .org, and .us versions of the same domain.

The price is only $20 for all 4, and I am tempted to buy them, but don't really know if that's worth it or not? I know that companies used to register all the different versions, but do most still do that?

If you are planning to stick to this domain name and use it for development and think that the other TLD's might become a liability to you in future then $20 is a very good deal to grab them all.

I didn't really buy the domain to develop, I thought it would make a good short-term investment, but now I have to decide if a potential buyer would consider it a plus to get all 5 domains as a package.

The name could be a company name or a good name for an ecommerce site. I guess paying $40 a year to register all 5 domains would not be a problem for a buyer, it depends on if they see the need to "protect" the domain.

It's a single made-up word that makes you think of buying things and also electonics / computers. The name could also be used for an advertising or martketing company. I'll share what it is when I decide what to do.

Humm.... Made up name. It can be both ways. It can be more risky also to invest more money and then take the loss or not to invest more money and then take the loss.

Well, I decided to invest in all of the domains. So here they are:

buynetics.us

I really like the name or I would not have bought them all. Any feedback pro or con is welcome. I would be interested to hear what people think may be the value(s) are, but I think I need to find the right buyer if I'm going to make some money on these. On top of the purchase price I had to pay for the transfer to my account also... $$

When you wrote short term, do you mean one year or two years?

About the domains, I don't think they are very valuable since the word "netics" is not a popular keyword. I also think that most people doesn't know what it means. I don't know what it means either although I know a lot of vocabulary words.

So, with all that, I think that the total of all the domains are worth $100 at the most.

By short term I meant some weeks or months. I could consider long term for domain investments to be at least a year.

I bought the domains mostly on a "feeling". I first bought buynetics.com for $2.00US. I just liked the sound and the high-tech sales image it gave me. Buy-Cybernetics.

You're mostly right about "netics". You don't know what it means because it is not really a word. But people do know "cybernetics" and that is what I thought of - something to do with computers (I am a native US-English speaker.), but that is not accurate.

I looked it up and for this domain the keywords are buy, net, and ics. But "ics" is not really a word but something you add on to denote the study or area of practice. Like phonetics or politics.

So it doesn't make sense as the study of or "buynet". But sometimes words or phrases can have great value even if they don't have any really meaning when they are created. Think SONY .

So I have invested in these domains, 6 x $2 each, in hopes of locating someone that sees the value of a very brandable name. I know this is a risk and I don't have much experience in this area, but I thought I would give it a try.

I am pleased with the value that you state for the domains. I think if I can find the right buyer I should do very well. If not I would be happy with the price you mention. Thank you!!!

It is brandable domain that is surely true.

And If nielsencl don't mind then he will surely share the details of the deal when he will sell it. To get some value sticking to this for a while might be a good idea.
