Is SEO compulsary?

I have one site and it is not getting traffic. I purchased it from someone on another forum and he told me that it has some traffic. I am not seeing any traffic and I am also not getting money from adsense. I asked others and was told I need to do SEO for it. I also checked search engines but I am confused about it. I don't want to be number one in google, yahoo and msn I just want some traffic so that I can run my website and get some money to support myself and go to school. Can anyone give me some easy way to get the traffic to my site? Also please give me some guidelines to earn more from adsense.

as u told u want traffic on your site, for getting traffic u need to get ranking on search engines for some popular keywords related to your sites.than and than u will get traffic.
there are other option like put your site in signature,send urls to all your friends and put that url in signature of mails. u will earn from adsense once u get traffic.

But I think it is becoming compulsary nowadays as the competition is much more compared to the competition that used to be in older days.
