Is the keywords meta tag obsolete? What is it, and does the meta keywords tag matter for SEO?
Yes, the META KEYWORDS tag is IGNORED. So you can put whatever you want in the META KEYWORDS tag it does NOTHING.
That said, KEYWORDS are incredibly important and you SHOULD put keywords in strategic locations, starting with the TITLE tag. We teach this in our class on PAGE TAGS and SEO.
What's ironic is that the META KEYWORDS is ignored, but the TITLE tag is an incredibly important tag, and DOES matter and IS a META tag. The META DESCRIPTION is also very important and DOES matter. So lots of confusion and semantics here!
In terms of how quickly you can get to the top of Google, really you can do this VERY quickly IF -
a) you promote your site with great inbound links, press releases, etc.
b) you have a well optimized SEO-friendly site.
c) you get social mentions (e.g., Twitter) from powerful people.
SEO is all about competition, and it varies on your particular industry.
