Should a website be optimized for many search engines?

I wanted to have my website indexed by Google, Yahoo and MSN when launch planning was done. I have been researching purposely for this. I have realized that thousands of search engines were present during my research. Do you have any idea that a fresh site should get listed on all the possible search engines out there? Does that mean that search engines that are not popular means they are not reliable? Would it be okay if Google was the only search engine your site indexed to? Would I also index the site to other search engine such as Yahoo and MSN too?
