Every lady dreams of owning a big and lavish kitchen. But not always is her wish fulfilled. Each of a middle class family would have a kitchen with some compromise on space. But even a small kitchen can be as efficient and effective as a larger kitchen.
One of the basic rules to make space is to purge relentlessly and get rid of everything that is of no use. Kitchen should be clutter free. One should invest more on small kitchen appliances. To make more space pull-out and fold-away surfaces should be created. The walls can be effectively used for storage. Racks and rails can be hung from the ceiling or on the walls to store some of the utensils. Abundant shelves should be provided inside the cupboards to increase the space for storage. The back of the doors can also be used for spice racks or utensil storage. Use of glossy paint and shiny surfaces can make the kitchen look bigger.
The kitchen layouts for a small kitchen are All-in-a-line, Galley, L-shape, U-shape and Island. All-in-a-line is suitable for small but long kitchens as it takes up only one wall. Galley is a small kitchen with a row of units on both sides and a corridor in between. It has more counter space than an all-in-a-line kitchen. In an L-shape layout one can place the stove on the short side and make the kitchen ergonomic and easy to work in. U-shape is not a very good option for a small kitchen as it occupies the three walls and leaves only little space to move about. In an Island layout, the kitchen is open to another room.
One should decide wisely on the layout and with meticulous planning can make a small kitchen spacious.
