URL difference.

Hi guys what is the different between "http://www.domain name" and "http://domain name".

Both of URL show us same site right but google count different back lings to both of URL's. Can anybody know what's the reason?

To make the PR pass on to the www. or the non www. version of the website you can use the .htaccess file.

Yes google does counts the different backlinks and different PR.

But if you have a google webmaster account you can specify the correct version of the site.

i don't care much for the www. and not www. i am just making links for one of the domain name and then sticking to it till the end so i get traffic to it.

as stated above, google treat this as a different site, thus counting backlinks differently, but .htaccess can just redirect non www to www as stated by nick.

Here is one trick to make it all go to www. version of the site.

Options +FollowSymLinks 
RewriteEngine on 
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^yoursite.com [NC] 
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.yoursite.com/$1 [L,R=301]

You can put this in the .htaccess and everything will be redirected to www. version of your site. Plus if you have a pattern then just don't worry about it. Keep on building links for the domain name you are using from the very beginning and stay with it. Most of my own sites are not using this .htaccess code. I did had a debate on this issue on another forum with one SEO guy. But in end it was accepted that this doesn't means much in special scenarios. Like if you are consistently using the NON www or WWW. version of your site to make its backlinks.
