What is a short vs. long tail search term?

Short tail searches mean one or just a few words:

knee surgeons

Long tail searches are more than just a few words:

knee surgeons in san francisco

There is a trade off in terms of SEO. The fewer the words (the shorter the tail), the MORE search volume generally, the MORE educational searches tend to be, the LOWER the value in terms of ability to create a conversion. The more the words (the longer the tail), the LOWER the search volume generally, the MORE transactional the searches, and the HIGHER the value.

Don't worry so much about the short tails, but rather focus on medium and long tail searches - that tends to be more of a sweet spot. That's why I like to say, 'Riches are in the niches,' when it comes to SEO.
