My main computer with Windows 2000 went down last week and I bought a replacement that came with the Home Basic version of Vista on it.
Since I avoided XP for many years (It's ok, but I just didn't like it or NEED it.) I thought that perhaps I should get it and learn to work with it since at some point there will be NO support for Win2k anymore.
It bothered me the way things were different, and I had the user-protection turned on so I have to "approve" many basic operations when installing and using software, but I thought "At least I am protected, even if I am bothered...".
But after I installed Office 2000 and discovered that my Outlook no longer worked (I couldn't send mail and when I opened up old mail, the message did not show up...!), I decided I did NOT have time to put up with such a bad "downgrade" and made a backup of Vista (Note: use good discs because the system only lets you make ONE copy!!!), and installed Win2k again. I am now saving all of the service packs and patches so if I have to do this again and the support it gone I can still get it installed again.
If you have XP, then Vista may be fine for you, but I caution you to look into it closely before purchasing or installing Vista. To me, it was just like XP for the most part and I didn't really see much that was different...
