Buying or Trading Text Links?

Hello everyone,

Common sence tells me that buying text links will get you a higher page rank, however if I was to trade links with an equal site (same pr as I would have bought) would this do that same for my page rank?

Does giving them a link back affect me in anyway? Please help.
