We will take a look on how to choose the right domain name for buying and selling purposes.
The first and foremost thing that needs to be kept in mind is that NO CYBER SQUATTING
If you don’t know what cybersquatting is and have directly jumped to this chapter then please do read the previous chapter and make yourself familiar with it.
The best way to earn the money with the domain names is to choose it based on the following points:
- Generic dictionary words which are used in day to day life.
- The extension of the domain name. (Popular one right now is the .com)
- Less characters in the domain name itself.
- The Pronunciation.
- Keyboard relationship. (Not much needed but worth looking into)
Now first of all talking about the day-to-day life words and the dictionary words. They are the best ones as they relate to some product or some service and the people tend to type in that name in hope to go to the proper website for that particular product or service.
The sad news is that the most of them are already registered.
So how would you get one? Here is the trick. Try to keep a small notepad and a pen or pencil handy while you are watching a movie or listening to a song. Note down some important words you think are worth registering. You can also do this while reading a novel or some articles.
When you have got the words list then go to the domain name availability checker like http://www.domaintools.com and check if they are available for registrations or not.
Now about the TLD’s. The most popular TLD right now is the .com
The .com is ruling the internet. The very first preference should always be a .com version of the domain names that are available. Even if you don’t find a .com then there is no need to worry. You can see if the .net, .org or the .info version of that domain names are available or not. But here watch out to only put your money on the domains like love.net moon.info etc. as they would fetch you some money upon reselling it. Registering HelloHowAreYou.org will be worthless.
Moving on to less character domain names. Now the current trend is that if you find a 3 letter .com domain name then just grab it right there. (Check for the trademark issues) They are selling like hot cakes in the domain name markets. The catch is that none are available for registration. 1 and 2 character domains are just out of reach because when you lookup for the availability of it it will return an error message from the registrar. So we are only left with 4 and 5 letter domains. Where 4 letter .coms have all been registered by the date of 2nd Nov 2007.
The 1 character .coms there can only be 26 possibilities. For the 2 characters there can be only 676 possibilities. 3 letter domain have 17576 possibilities. Which too are unavailable. 4 letters are all gone on 2nd Nov 2007. So if you are choosing a domain name for branding of your website it is better to choose the 5 letter .com domain rather then something else, because you are going to brand it no matter what.
Pronunciation is not an issue if you know English very well. Which, I can assume that you know some English as you are reading this book. For people who are weak in English they can look in dictionaries and the online thesaurus.com for reference and find the new words. It might seem foolish but I have heard that some people are throwing in full dictionaries in the domain name mining programs to lookup the availability and then they take in the good domains that are showed by the software as available ones.
Lastly comes the keyboard relationship. This is short and sweet. Imagine typing in “fhur†and imagine typing “vhep†so here fhur.com is easy to type in. Some people do see this relationship while buying the domain name. So it is better to go with this kind of names rather then with the other hard to type in ones.
You can use online domain generators, domain name suggestion tools to find the domains. If you have little budget then you can buy the good domains from the other domain name sellers who are buying and selling them. Just watch out for the trademark issues and the blacklisting of that domain name if there are any. Watch out for the latest trends if someone would have came to you in late 20th century shouting about some device called a Mobile then you might have ignored the story. But today you yourself can see where the mobile industry is. So if you can get a good domain for some descent amount then don’t let it go.
Invest wisely. Don’t fall in scams and stay clear of trespassing on someone’s trademarks. You can be a good domain seller in end.
The next chapter will shed some light on buying and selling the domains. For the things that should be watched out and the things that needs to be done.
