There’s no denying it, Facebook is booming. The leader of all of social media platforms recently announced its billionth member.

Facebook pages, in terms of business usage is currently hovering at around 11 million (and growing…fast). Most bright business owners see the value of Facebook when it comes to communicating with customers. Most probably also recognise the importance of word of mouth recommendations, and let’s face it, where better than Facebook to get those?

The real question business owners must start asking however, is how to win over those customers enough to then turn that communication into a sale.

Sounds pretty basis yes? It is, however it’s where you either set yourself up for success or failure on Facebook. This is the foundation. Only attack this task when you have enough time to get it right. Get the look, feel and strategy right, all should reflect your brand and what it stands for. Understand that very important interaction with existing and potentially new customers will take place here.

Start with your cover photo – go for one that communicates what your brand is all about. It’s acceptable to change your cover photo as time goes by, advertising a competition, a give away or a major sale or product launch, but for consistency don’t change your profile picture, this should always be your company logo.

Once you have the above tasks complete and you are happy with them, begin adding milestones and images and posts to your timeline. It’s important to get some content into this quickly, to give visitors something to connect with and be engaged. Be creative, quirky and interesting. Don’t forget to use plenty of images. If you have physical stores, add images of them, or maps. Add product images. The last step in this stage is to then encourage existing customers to visit your Facebook page and to like it. Don’t forget to add a “like us on Facebook” icon to your website and other communications you share with customers.

This is where most companies fail. They spend a little time setting up a page, and then either fail to ever go back to it and add content and engage with customers on the page, or they add boring content that fails to connect or engage anyone. Before you add content, put yourself in the shoes of a visitor to your page, would you enjoy reading it? Is it interesting? Is it unique? Connect with your Facebook fans by sharing interesting content. Engagement is the key driver for maximising the benefits of Facebook, get this wrong and it’s all over. Set some time in your diary each week to share new content/create new posts. You don’t need to spend hours doing this, it can be as simple as starting with 3 to 4 posts per week. Since user likes appear on their newsfeed, each post you make should be considered as an opportunity to not only touch base with your existing audience, but also to reach out to their network of friends as well. This is the power of Facebook.

Whilst you should not make all of your posts on Facebook about sales, it is important that you reward existing customers and entice new ones with give aways and prizes etc from time to time. Exclusive offers to Facebook users are a great way to create a buzz, and build your profile on Facebook.

Don’t forget to keep things human by asking questions, seeking opinions, and occassionally sharing third party content that is topical and interesting. remember to mix it up with the use of text, images and videos.

If you are in a hurry and want to build your fan base fast then you are in luck. Facebook ads are a way of finding fans that can ultimately be converted into buying customers. You can control your budget with Facebook ads, and the amount you spend per ad. Hire an Online Marketing Company that specialises in Facebook or Social Media Advertising & Marketing to assist you here. They will ensure you get best bang for buck.

Research suggests that over 50% of Facebook users are more likely to purchase a product after they have “liked” it. That’s a fairly compelling number for a marketing channel that is free to use. MGet your start on Facebook today by following these simple steps above. If you need any help, Newpath WEB has a team that specialises in Facebook Advertising and Marketing, and we are here to help you begin converting Facebook fans into customers.
