What are your favorite marketing techniques lets discuss them so that other users can take benefit of it and learn some new tricks while reading this. I first of all choose a good domain name. Then I make a cool and unique script on it. After that I start my directory submission campaign which includes around 5000 directories, all free. After that I let it ride for somedays and take some rest from all this work. In that time I slowly write some articles relevant to my site and after 10 or 15 days I get them submitted to article directories. Soon follows the forum posting which can generate backlinks from signatures and traffic from it.

I am planning on making a cooking blog for my first project. It will be updated daily and describe the dinner situation at my living quarters and provide a list of ingredients and instructions on how to make the dish.

I am not sure what my major marketing technique will be, but I am planning on loading the blog with a lot of content and seeing where it all goes from there. I think that I would be submitting it to the directories in the search engines after two weeks.

Any suggestions on an applicable marketing technique for this type of project?

One good marketing strategy is make blog or forum as sub domain for your targeted site.
it will be batter if u go for blog as u will update content regularly and google love fresh content.
it will help in bust ranking..

I m not totally agree with pranav,
it is true that social bookmarking will give u more traffic but according to my experience it wont give relevant traffic.and according to me non relevant traffic will just eat your bandwidth.

well for me, digg, del.ico.us and slashdot has been working pretty ok, although not good!

I think that social bookmarking and social directories will give your website more traffic and more relevant users depending upon the topic of your website.

For example, I think that Chocokriz may get more relevant users from MySpace or del.icio.us because cooking can appeal to a bigger majority than software; obviously, though, Chocokriz would not have the advantage if pranavbhat went to some technology directories and technology sites.

I would consider the topic at hand heavily before submitting sites to social directories and websites.

I have submitted my site in many social bookmarking services. Still i am not getting traffic as social bookmarkings don't stay much longer in the limelight.

Yes jayesh i m agree with u,
i have done the same for my sites but still waiting for some traffic to my site..

I have also finished directory submissions to more then 10,000 directories in last six months. Got PR 4 and around 400 uniques per month. Now i am getting 50 hits and recently got pagerank three when i was hoping for PR five.

i this month have got more than 600 uniques but no pagerank yet as well as my CTR is too low!
its almost nil!!

can someone tell me on CTR?

I have a new marketing technique.

I am a webmaster, SEO, programmer and designer myself. I am a full time webmaster but still I do believe that the marketing of my sites don't depend on the technical side of the sites. It rather depends on social side too.

The sites that had been receiving good traffic are the sites that I have made efforts to make it more cool and user friendly. More attractive and informational for users rather then search engines. Users don't care much if your title is SEO optimized or not. But if they like the site they do tell others that the so and so site really rocks. Yes geeks do talk sometimes with other geeks. As I myself only have one topic to discuss whenever I go out with my friends and that is Internet.

I am not saying that just depend on the above mentioned technique. But it is a very major point that many of the website owners would like to try it out themselves.

yes...that is very true and that is what search engines have always stressed on, to make site for users and not for search engines!!

And like nameslot said you can have a "tell a friend about us" like also on your website! it sounds simple but it is quite effective!!

Yes, it is prudent to have a "Tell A Friend About This Article" feature on a website.

These links get exchanged and used many times when an article achieves popularity as a meme or recurring theme on the Internet. It is similar to friends showing each other funny news articles or strange news articles; those articles, on a news or media website, tend to get the most views.

Another nice technique I am using right now is to submit RSS feeds to the the RSS directories on the internet.

This is only possible if you have RSS feeds for your site. But if you are running a dynamic site then you can easily use some existing code to generate the RSS feeds for your site's content. It does helps a lot to get better SERP's as some of this RSS directories displays the feeds on their pages and they are highly ranked in the search engines.
