According to the Reserve Band of India NRIs or PIOs (people if Indian Origin) can operate a bank account, they are categorized into three. They are, Non-Resident Ordinary Rupee account (NRO account), Non-Resident External Rupee account (NRE account) and Foreign Currency Non-Resident bank account (FCNRBA). PIOs sand NRIs are advised by the reserve bank of India to read the complete terms and conditions of each of these accounts and only then choose to open an account which is best suitable for their needs.
