Someone asked me this question on another forum and I thought I would share my answer here as well:

Nielsencl you suggest optimizing your site. Ok you use the right keywords, check keyword density, and optimize it. Then what it the next step. Submit to the search engines using an automated search, hand submit, wait until the search engines find you or something else?
Well, for the style of optimization that I do, I first do the keyword research, then optimize the site, and then submit. I don't worry about the keyword density.

The reason I don't is that I follow this simple formula: Use as many different keywords and phrases as possible both in the tags and the on-page content. Just make sure that you use good English, and stay within normal limits for things like the title tag (about 70 characters).

Once the site is optimized, the search engines that spider will find it, but you should submit to the others that won't and of course to directories. Submit to as many places as possible. Submit by hand or hire a service since there are some ones that are quite good and very cheap. Submission software can work, but it is not as effective and if done incorrectly can be a waste of time. WHAT you submit is important. Start with a good DMOZ-style listing and make sure you follow the rules of the site you are submitting to. If they have a comments field or a place for a note, THANK THEM!

Most people think directories "owe" them a free listing, and that's not true. On the other hand, some directory owners think you should PAY THEM to take your listing. I think that a good listing has value and is a fair exchange between site owner and directory owner.

There are lots of other things that you can do like link building, but if you just do what I described you should have good results. The three things that are all important are:

Keyword research
Optimization
Submissions

If any of these are not done well the results will not be as good as they can be.

I would suggest not to use any such autosubmission softwares rather submit your site manually choosing proper category; this will speed up your approval and thus backlink.

Also forum/blog posting will also help you a lot but these are traditional SEO i would like to know what are the basic steps for getting your site at top under
Latent semantic indexing and Personalize search techniques

Thanks......

Hi Crish, your all things right but you always say you don't worry about the keyword density so don't target any keywords right then what's the meaning of keyword research?

Well keywords are not important only for content based sites. But for example you have dating site and any shopping related site then what? At that time the keywords are take a part to get traffic.

Thanks.

I consider there to be two types of optimization: 1) Targeted optimization and 2) General optimization.

The style of optimization that I do is General optimization and it's now being talked about as going for the "long tail" of search.

When I optimize, I research as many keyword phrases as possible for a site, and this can result in a list with many hundreds or thousands of keyword phrases.

When I optimize, I try to use as many of these as possible all through the site. The result is that the site is found for many of the different things that people search with. Since I use so many, the site is also picked up for things that are not used very much, since the keywords in the phrases are close together.

The results of this kind of optimization CAN be nice rankings for some popular keyword phrases, but maybe not. It doesn't matter to me since I almost never check rankings. I only care that the traffic to the site increases and that the traffic is for things that are appropriate, that is, what the site is about.

This is much different from targeted optimization, where you have a small list of keyword phrases. You have to take more care to optimize this way and it is more difficult since you have to repeat your keywords/phrases and still have good site copy.

You then have to watch the rankings and make changes if you don't get the results you want, and keep watching in case things change. If you get some good rankings for top keywords, this can result in quite a bit of traffic, but it's a lot of work.

General optimization does not need to be watched that closely. Once a site is working, the traffic stays about the same for a long time. The reason is that as certain keyword phrases rise and fall in the rankings, the overall traffic stays about the same or slowly increases. Adding more content and doing other things keep things going or further increase traffic and PR.

Is targeted SEO better than General SEO? Maybe. But using general SEO I know that I can work on a site that has been running for 3-6 months and increase the traffic 2-4 times at least. If I can deliver on that and I do, my clients are happy.

So you are for sure using keywords and they are very important and you use as many as possible. But you also must follow rules of good English usage so that the copy does not sound strange. This is not too hard because you have so many keyword phrases to work with. Using good English means you don't have to worry about keyword density. It it reads well, then it could not be too overdone.

i m taking care of the following things while go for content optimization and meta tags writing

- keyword density
- keyword proximity
- keyword prominence

as other members discuss about keyword density i would like to add some thing -> we must have to take care of density coz some time keyword density increases than 6-8% and Google consider it as a keyword stuffing. and some time it increase up to high level and our site have to pay for it.

where as proximity and prominency play big role in ranking. so try to start your title or description which mail targeted keyword.

More importantly getting back links with keyword rich anchor text. This will give you a significant boost in Google.

The dmoz listings can be painful suggest me a other directory site which helps in boosting traffic, dmoz listing is never guaranteed mostly a waste of time.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Keywords are very much important as way for the customers to be on your site.Optimization and marketing ways are the next step to make your site number one in search engines for the traffics you generate from what you have done.

Press releases and article submissions are also used for SEO. Submitting them to directories and placing links to the articles could help boost traffic and site PR. Aside from these, you can also tap social media sites for giving your site more visitors.
