Tactics for new website

I just want to develop my site properly to get the more traffic and sales. For this I have decided to modify my link structure and file names totally and also improve the quality of my page content. But I want to ask you that should I start with new domain or stay on my old domain. I have to do it carefully as I do not want any affect on my income and also don't want to get banned in Google. As I have some ideas like building new site on new domain and permit my old site to continue as is. Or just build a new site on my current domain and record all of my existing pages when new site is posted. And the other idea is that to build a new site on my current domain, permitting my current pages to stay online, but detached from linking structure of new site design. Any help will be appreciated.
