Web Browsers and their listings

I don’t use internet often and don’t know everything about website and web browsers. My knowledge in terms of website is a bit narrow and I want to improve on it. Soon, I am going to start developing and designing a website. I want to know about different methods to accomplish my goal. For web browsing purposes, I am directed to 3rd page whenever I am using Microsoft’ Internet Explorer. But when I switched to Safari, I was directed to 5th page. I am still clueless about this particular difference. Please share your opinions. I know, it would take some time for me to know everything about web.
