What is it all about an outdated Google link?

Google often deletes outdated links from its search engine. At least, that’s what I have been informed by several web developers. But I am not sure whether this is true or not. Even if it is taken to be true, then how does the search engine go about it? What are the techniques involved in the procedure. Does the website show up when I type out the URL in the box? These are some of the questions that I have been trying hard to find an answer. Is there any body who can really help me out in this regard?
