What is the general size for Avatar ?

I have tried many times but I am unable to insert avatar into any profile because it restricts size so how much is necessary and can I make an avatar by browsing from my hard drive ?

However, the mini view could have smaller avatar size so it could fit more info in less space.

Avatar has it's own size.
Cropping it may fix that.
