Where does the domain name registrars gets their domain names from?
do they purchase all the domain names?

Depends on the registrar and the tld.

AFAIK, if its .com, then they buy it from verisign who ICANN gave exclusive rights to (yeah thats a "free market" for ya - bs)

Country specific domains e.g. .co.uk will usually have a governing body - in the case of .uk, I think its nominet.org.uk
