Yes the question is that if you use PHP for your sites or as a development tool then what are the things that you like about PHP. What are the advantages and drawbacks of PHP.

As a programmer myself I would like to make an opening comment that I have never seen such a beautiful programming language ever. It is robust and easy. Its fun playing in PHP and making wonderfull web applications.

Post your opinions on it.

Easy, Flexible and a great programming language.

I can only think about the advantages of PHP. I don't know about any disadvantages of it. As I have never thought about it in past.

The best thing I like about php is that I know php

Because it is everywhere, has so many free applications and comes with every hosting package I have ever seen.

However, IMHO, it has ugly syntax.

e.g.

Dollar signs in front of variables? UGLY!

Using "->" instead of "." to refer to object/class properties? UGLY!

Untyped variables? UGLY!

I am used to programming delphi, java, c#, actionscript which have:

variables with no dollar signs
use of dot notation to reference object/class properties
strongly typed variables

Also Coldfusion which has the above except only method arguments/returns can be typed, there is no strongly typed variables.

Well, the one thing that really gets on my nerves is that PHP has no namespace support. Does anyone know what I mean?

I used to code some pages in PHP a long time ago... but, now I just use html again.

I will be honest and say that I do not know how to code in PHP off of the top of my head. I have a lot of software that helps me along so that I do not have to know each and every command line and type everything perfect. Does anyone here use PHP for all of their projects? What program do you use to edit it?

I use php for every project of mine which is related to website development.

I use Notepad. Just simple notepad which comes with windows. To code my php projects. I had started php myself and at that time no one was around to tell me which editor to use. On the contrary I was not even knowing that editors existed. So I am really acquainted with using Notepad for my php projects.

It might sound funny but I have made projects ranging from 150,000 lines to 300,000 lines of php code scaling upto 1200+ php files in the notepad. And on my old PC which I had owned from 2002 and am still loving it much.

Have never used it. Thanks for suggesting I will download it right now.

If the syntax is colored then it will atleast freshen up my mind while coding the projects. Till now everything was black and white.

PHP has an edge over locked-in solutions such as JSP and ASP for most Web development work because it is a cross-platform technology. Surveys indicate that PHP is rapidly becoming the most widely used Web scripting language and PHP skills are now considered essential for many Web developers.
