Addon and Subdomain

I came across two terms and I am wondering if they’re exactly the same thing. So, is an addon domain name and subdomain name exactly the same thing?

I have a domain with Bluehost Adding a subdomain (with Aldo Bluehost) Where I can download the image file for the addon domain? I created a folder of images in the images folder but sub_domain appears to open the site.

An add-on domain is just like having a separate web site. The add-on domain will be hosted or pointed to a folder in your public html folder of your main-domain. A sub domain utilities the existing main domain name. It does not have its own domain name. A sub domain points to a folder in your public html directory of your main-domain.
