How do you research keywords for SEO?

I'm curious how others are doing keyword research and how well it works for them?

The main tool is the paid service from www.Wordtracker.com. Most professional SEOs only use this and look down on all other tools.

There is a new service that I don't know much about called Keyword Discovery and I'd like to hear about that if anyone has tried it.

Overture, now Yahoo, has provided a keyword search tool for many years that a lot of people use because it is free and also quite effective. I use this data, but I do so with the free program from www.GoodKeywords.com. The company that makes GK also makes some other very good tools and some will be of interest to domainers.

I used to play with overture data in past. Haven't been doing much SEO things from sometime.

But keyword discovery looks promising.

I m doing SEO since last six months and i m using wordtracker and keyword digger right now.and getting good results on that.but new to this keyword discovery and goodkeyword.com

why not to use the adwords program from google??
i mean it provides results from google search queries...what else do u want??
i have been using google keyword search for adwords?

I use that google adwords tool. But recently I saw one thread on another forum that one guy did choosed his keywords based on that adwords tool and it was showing him 400 queries per day. Now he is on #1 for that keyword and he is getting 2 hits from Google.com

I don't know why that kind of thing happened to him or was he just making up the story.

oh....thats a strange story, there is more possibility that hes faked it...coz this sounds impossible...#1 in google for a keyword and 400 queries for that keyword and just 2 hits, looks quite farfetched!!

LOL now that would have really made that guy insane. He thought he will get 400 hits or atleast 200 out of it being at #1 position on the search engine and he gets 2.

Maybe he is faking that story or there is some serious mistake on the users side.

Ooops just completed my 900 posts

Did he really only get 2 hits from Google?

I have a general query for all users. Is it prudent to pay for search engine optimization keywords, or would it be better to start off doing some original research and trying to see what works best for that specific site?

Wordtracker seems a little expensive for an initial investment.

Original research is the way to go....
coz most of the SEO firms are a fake i think...sorry guys for all you SEO guys here.....but one of my friend got badly duped.....i mean he even got his domain penalised by google!!

So, i think original research is always better than SEO firms...
and there are some good alternatives to wordtracker like google adwords...

I bet he is faking it ;p I doubt its a mistake.

Holy crapola, 900. Haha, happy 900th post. :D

Yes that might be a fake case.

Back to the topic I do just make up my keywords naturally and just go on writing the content around the keywords that comes to my mind. LSI might also play some important role in getting better rankings for the main keyword of mine.
