Moreover in case of new sites or if you have a significant number of new (or recently updated pages), then using a sitemap can be vital to your success. You may still go without a sitemap but it is true and more people are thinking that soon sitemaps will become the standard way of submitting a site to search engines.

It's odd how the importance of sitemaps has ebbed and flowed. For awhile there they didn't seem to matter. I think if you are targeting Bing or Yahoo they are more important. Google seems to crawl most pages though.
