Improving backlinks of my site in Google

Since the last 3 months, I have been doing work for this particular auction site. In the last Google PR update, it got a PR2. Though it has only around 3 backlinks in Google, it has the capability of getting good traffic. In Google, I also wish to increase my site backlinks. For my website I need to get some backlinks and so I need suggestions of some good sites from where I can obtain these necessary backlinks. As backlinks are considered seriously by Google, I need to get these backlinks. Does anyone know of a way in which I could improve my backlinks in Google?
