is it good to buy exact match domains

I am new to ranking sites on google and was wondering whether it is good to buy exact match domain or brand name domain

Exact match domains is not good according to SEO. exact match domains were able to rank highly with fewer links and less content than branded competitors.

There are two school of thoughts, one say you can and one say stay safe and play on brand names. I personally think that you should go for a brand name instead of choosing a exact match domain name as brand name will benefit in a longer run.
