There is a website called topseos.com that tracks (allegedly) the top seo's. But beyond that, I insist on metrics with any SEO company. Let's measure our Google Rank before, during, after. Let's measure our PageRank. Let's measure our inbound SEO traffic.

Also ask for references and examples of projects that they have worked on.
