Robot Behavior with 404 pages and Robots.txt

Hello.

I'd like to know if anyone can give me any advice on how to take care of all the pages that google indexed even though they are 404 Error Pages. Do crawlers eventually stop indexing these pages if it tries enough times and still get a 404 Error? What I'd really want to happen is for those pages not to show up the results pages.
