I would like to share some things we should NOT do when promoting a site
1. Keyword spamming. There are people who use this to "fool" the search engines ... unfortunately they get banned from the SE and that's not what they wanted to achieve I assume.
2. Promoting under construction pages. Needless to say more .. finish and promote it, not the other way .. Since people will have a bad opinion about your site.
3. Promoting in link farms ... looks like their glory days have long since passed. It can really ruin your "relationship" with the search engines.

6. Brazen Promotion: On your face tactics on forums, website or blog can put off people. Target your audience subtly and respect the rules and etiquettes of the blogs, forums used.

These tips and information are really making sense and true as well, I really agree with the tip “Promoting under construction pages” because one of my friends has to face a unique issue due to the particular matter. Grate acknowledges though, Thanks for sharing.

You could add to the "not so" or "do not" list:
- boring, outdated content
- brashy and aggressive ads - too many pop ups

You have to build your website for the visitors/people, that is human beings. If you are not careful you will end up scaring away your targeted and potential customers.
They only need a few seconds to decide if they like what they see and if they might find what they are looking for on a specific site or not.
