I would suggest first submitting Your site to search engines so that you get into their indexing cycle.
Now slowly you can start builing back links. The resource for posting your back links to the good directories is here:

Also setup your own small link exchange directory. Because some sites want back links.
Then some black hat techniques. Join some traffic exchnages, banner exchanges, and get some tool like alexa booster. This will legally inflate your traffic. This way you will come into some light instead of sitting behind the curtains.
What I personally do is that i provide traffic exchange service my self on a subdomain.
Here is an example. http://www.traffic.bluesoftweb.com
I am getting 500 uniques on that.
Plus hits are unlimited. Because when users get traffic on their site it also give me one hit in return.
Then Put a nice signature in your profile and goto forums and start giving away some good advices that you have learnt so far from your experiences with the internet. This will also bring in some good visitors.
Now slowly stop tools like traffic boosters. And then slowly stop participating in traffic exchanges. Don't stop your traffic exchange right now. In 2 or 3 months you will surely have some good traffic.
This is my personal experience. And i am doing this for all my websites. I make them run even if they don't want to.
I also don't get bored with failures. If you don't have money the apply for being editors at directoires. And then slowly put your site into it.
Presently I am editor at zeal.com and skaffe.com
Have applied to dmoz and open-site.org But this time they are not rejecting my application. It is taking long time for my rejection email so I think they will accept me.
And don't get afraid of trying new things. Every new thing is the best internet marketing technique. Because nobody knows about it except you.
